Administration

Administer calcium carbonate (eggshell source) and vitamin D3 orally, preferably with food to enhance absorption and mitigate gastrointestinal side effects like bloating or constipation. Chewable tablets must be chewed thoroughly before swallowing, while standard tablets should be taken with a full glass of water. For optimal absorption, total daily doses exceeding 500 mg of elemental calcium should be divided and taken throughout the day. Caution is required in patients with renal impairment (eGFR less than 30 mL/min) due to the risk of hypercalcemia, and use is generally avoided in severe chronic kidney disease or hypercalciuria. Monitor serum calcium levels in elderly patients and those with sarcoidosis or hyperparathyroidism to prevent toxicity. Space administration by at least two hours from medications such as bisphosphonates, quinolones, or tetracyclines to avoid significant drug interactions.
