Gefapixant is administered orally as a film-coated tablet at a recommended dose of 45 mg twice daily, with or without food. Tablets must be swallowed whole and should not be broken, crushed, or chewed to ensure proper delivery. In patients with severe renal impairment (eGFR less than 30 mL/min/1.73m2), the dose should be reduced to 45 mg once daily, while no adjustment is required for mild to moderate impairment or hepatic dysfunction. Use in the pediatric population under 18 years is not recommended. Common adverse reactions include taste disturbances such as dysgeusia or ageusia, which are typically reversible upon discontinuation. Care should be taken with initial dosing in elderly patients due to potential declines in renal function.
